About Katie Heeks
I have recently graduated from Derby University where I studied a BA (Hons) in Crafts. During my second year, I created a laser cut birch lighting using flower images, but in a ‘kaleidoscope style pattern’, the waste produced were flower shaped and as these were very appealing it seemed a shame to throw them away.
Consequently, I focused my attention of the capabilities of the laser cutter I was using. I discovered, I was able to utilise the cutter to produce delicate flowers forms that would otherwise be impossible to create by hand. Due to the forms such as flowers and animals that I was able to produce it led me to the idea of creating miniature gardens. Hence 'Gardens of Delight' were born.
The natural world is what inspires my art as such, I start with an initial hand drawn sketch of an animal or flower, the sketch is then digitised using a computer and the resultant silhouette is then sent to the cutter. Each garden is constructed by hand and arranged based on the shape and concept. Each of my gardens are dedicated to people’s passions, be it music, sport or gardening. Almost any hobby or interest can be incorporated into my work.
My first exhibition was in 2010 as a young meteor at Lustre. The exhibition provided my first real opportunity to exhibit and promote my work to the general public and my peers. Although, absolutely terrifying it enabled me to showcase and sell some of my pieces. The exhibition was a great success and provided a confidence boost that encouraged me to continue to produce items and to approach other galleries to exhibit my work.
Over the coming months, my work will be exhibited in a number of galleries and design shows across the country. The time, tears and stress so far have been worth it as I am now able to peruse a career in craft, which I have always dreamed of doing.
I hope that you have enjoyed viewing my work; I would love to discuss any special commissions so please feel free to contact me.
